This weekend saw the U8s enjoy a rather special trip to the Investec London Cup where they enjoyed watching the England Men’s and Women’s team win gold in the event.
The U8s were presented with tickets by NOW Pensions after coming second in their Short Corner Competition where they were shortlisted as one of the top three submissions, narrowly missing out on first place.
Coaches for the U8s side accompanied them and not only did they get to enjoy some great hockey, but also got to meet plenty of international stars and get their autographs.
The icing on the cake came as Eva Gomes, daughter of social secretary and Ladies 1XI player Emily Gomes, was selected to hand out medals to the gold, silver and bronze ladies’ winners live on Sky!
One of three lucky players, Eva had originally applied to be a mascot for the games, saying she would love the chance to meet Alex Danson. While she was unsuccessful, organisers for the event called to ask if she would like to hand out medals after her entry had caught their eye!
Eva said: “I felt so happy and only a little bit nervous when I gave out the medals. Alex Danson was kind and really smiley to me – I told her my Aunty went to school with her and she said, ‘I love Lucy Gomes!’
“I chatted to the girls from the Scottish team and they were really nice. The England goalie [Maddie Hinch] told me to keep playing hockey, then I could play for England one day too!”
U8s coach and Ladies 1st XI Captain Ali Holme, said: “For the U8 players it was a truly unique day and one they will never forget. To be able to watch some of the world’s biggest stars in action, and get to meet their heroes is an experience that can only encourage them to continue playing and enjoying their hockey. A big thank you to everyone involved and also to all our U8s who came along on the day and were a real credit to the Club.”
Isaac and Imogen Rabani, Lucy Butler, Oscar Handley and George and Tom Wright were among the U8s who enjoyed their day at the pitch and were accompanied by coaches Katinka Klijn, Keri Wilson, Ali Holme, Emily Gomes and Matt Aldrich, as well as Colts Secretary Martin Aldrich.
A big thanks to NOW Pensions and the Investec London Cup organisers for what was a great day and congratulations to the U8s!
